Default Transfer Case Fluid

We just got hit with more than a foot of snow here in new england and it the first time i used my 4wd in my pick up. I noticed it was very rough while in 4L or 4H. You car hear the whining as if there is no fluid in the transfer case. Im figuring the last owner/s never changed it. I have the haynes manual and it showes several different types of transfer cases. i was wondering which one my truck had as well as what type of fluid and how much do I need..

1996 laramie slt
1500
auto
4wd.

Im hoping this will fix the sounds and roughness.. If not I might need a new transfer case..

The type of transfer case shouldn't be all that important, for changing oil, unless you have a power takeoff, (doubtful) 3 quarts of dextron 3 Mercon (recommended) oughtta do the job, on the back of your case, there should be 2 plugs, one higher than the other, the upper one is for checking the oil, ought to be up to the bottom of the plug, cold, the lower plug is for draining. The plugs might be allen head plugs, or square drives, internal or external, I think mine are 1/2 ratchet drives... The book sez to change the oil every 24, 000 miles, OOOppps, I have somewhere around 150-200k miles on both of mine, never been changed, Hmm, better put that on the list of things to do, too!!

Thanx.. Yeah the haynes mentioned like 5 different transfer cases, all needing different amounts, thats why I asked what type.. I'll change the fluid and let you know if that helped..

update::

I changed the fluid. There was hardly any in there. Less than a quart total. I put the new fluid in and it barely took 1.5 quarts of fluid before it started to leak out of the fill hole. Is this normal? After tightening the 2 bolts in the tcase, I took it for a drive. It was still very rough and noisey at first. it eventually smoothed out significantly. Unfortunately I still have the whining noise. It seems to be coming from the front axles/differential. Im thinking maybe the diff fliud needs to be replaced as well.

Any suggestions??

Just pull the plug and drain and refill the Diffs. It'll take 15minutes to do. I recommend getting a cheap little hand pumper that filts ontop of the gear-oil bottle. It makes filling the Diff easier than trying to tip the bottle upsidedown.

Hope thats all the noise is.

I'd seriously be looking into putting some lucas friction additive of some sort to throw in that transfer case, if you have roughened up stuff in there, you need something really slippery in there to save its life. I would rechange that trans case oil again, too. First, tho, I'd stick a magnet to the drain plug, and drive it around some with that magnet attached, to try and get everything I could outta there. Then fill with the lucas and dextron.

Is there any reason why my t-case only took about 1.5 quarts after draining it? I even jacked the truck up at an angle to get alittle more in there.

Also the front diff doesnt look like it has a drain plug on it.. I have to check again though. How do I fill it after removing the cover if there is no drain plug.
