Default Thermostat or Something else?

Hi Everyone,

I'm a newbie to this forum and to troubleshooting my truck but need your help. I Drive a 2006 5.9 Cimmungs. Three days ago while driving to work I noticed my heat wasn't working and my truck wasn't to operating temperature when it usually is at that point of my morning drive. A couple minutes later I notice my water temp is over 2oo and still no heat. Then all of a sudden goes from 200 to redlined within seconds, heat kicks on and temperature drops to around operating temp of 190. This has been happening for the last 3 days and I'm concerned I'm damaging my engine.

Trying to save money so would like to replace myself. Thanks for all the help guys!

Need more info, Was it sitting outside? Cold, Very cold? sounds like the coolant is freezing up, could be a bad thermostat and that’s an easy change, as far as damage, there is issues if the rear cylinder does not get good flow as it has lower flow than the rest of the head and will toast a cylinder fast! its also "Cummins" no G

Thanks for the reply. Yes the truck currently sits outside and it's been in the low 30's at night and low 40s during the day so not too bad. I guess I'm more suprised by the how fast the water temp jumps when this happens?
