Default Body Color Matched Grille and Bumpers

I have a black 2007 SLT that I just bought about a week ago. I got a really good deal on it but I also really like the look of the Sports with the body matched grille and bumper (especially the all black ones :-) ) So I was wondering how hard it would be to paint the chrome ones? It seems like it would be a lot cheaper than buying new black ones. Is that something anyone here as done themselves and could give me some pointers? or should I just take it to a paint shop?

That's a good question. I have debated on this myself. Anyone done it yet? Anyone?

I'm wanting to do the same thing with my grille and bumpers. I'm not sure about painting the over the chrome, but I did look into buying replacement primered ones. LMC has the grille shells for around $100 and it comes black.

Yea I looked into that. I just seems like sanding the chrome and re-painting it would be a lot cheaper. I guess I'll do some research on painting chrome and see what I can find.

I just found this.

http://www.longislandcustoms.com/tec...ver_chrome.php

a pretty good step by step in painting over chrome.

This website has a few different sites listed that also have tips (including the one I liste above)

http://answers.google.com/answers/th...id/332587.html

If anyone tries it out. let me know.

If I remember right, they did it on an episode of Trucks! but that Stacey guy used a scratchpad to get the chrome surface rough so that the primer and paint would stick. He did say that not much sticks to a shiny chrome surface.

been done on bikes for years painting chrome requires an acid spray that will etch the chrome and provide a good surface for primer to stick without peeling.

i believe the acid spray is for chromed metal. should be able to scuff up the chrome plastic so there's no shine and shoot primer and paint over that

Tried it. I sanded the crap out of my chrome grill, used self-etching primer and plastic paint. Even clear coated it. It chips like crazy. I have re-done it twice already. Maybe I'm just horrible at painting. I plan on spending the $300 when i can and get one already painted.

As for the bumper, I sanded the crap outta that too, then used that DIY bed liner stuff on it. It held up good for a while but started flaking off. I took the bumper off and striped all the plastic off of it, took it to a local powder coater and had him powdercoat it black gloss. It came out looking great. After a few road trips, about 8k miles later, and many many gravel roads it still looks great. They put 3 coats on it and it cost me $100.
