Default Disconnect my EGR sensor?

A very good friend of mine knows a guy he considers a diesel engine genius said to disconnect my EGR sensor in order to get 3 mpg better mileage..anyone heard of this or know of any serious downsides of this?

unplugging wont do anything. you have to rip it out. but if you do that, your check engine light will come on. and your truck will through a shit ton of codes

If you unplug the egr valve, which alot of us have done, it leaves the butterfly valve mostly closed preventing the majority of soot in the egr system from entering the intake side of the system. You will see about 1-2mpg increase as well. Only one code will be thrown, cant remember which one, and occasionally on a real cold startup the engine might surge 2 or 3 times then level out. Ive been unplugged for 3k miles and will remain that way until I do the full deletes. Moral of the story unplug, gain mpg's and do less damage to your engine than if it were plugged in
