Question problem with rear end

I new to the site so hello everyone , I just recently purchased a 1999 dodge ram 1500 quad cab 4x2 with a 318. it was raining today when i left home and the tires broke traction with little acceleration so i let off the gas and now I have a loud popping noise coming from rear end and the driver side tire is wobbling when driving , I am assuming that I broke the axle? I found a used one with a 30 day warranty at local junk yard for $300 am I better off to just replace the whole thing or to rebuild the one I have?

If you broke the axle the truck would not move under it's own power. With the wobble you describe, I suspect an outboard axle bearing has failed or, possibly, one or more wheel lugs.

raise the rear end with a jack & jack stands, block the front wheels
hand spin both rear tires, it should tell you a lot, by feel & noise, also do a visual check
