I really like shak01's and crashes answer. It def. sounds like worn bearings too me from what you described. Can you milk it a week or month more? If you can follow shak01 instructions and find its full of sludge, probably yes, you can milk it along as long as the screen don't re-plug and you listen for the noise to not get worse. If its clean in the oil pan, you can run it longer than that. Just listen to the noise and as long as it doesn't get worse, keep the engine RPM's low and start making plans for a major repair or replacement. You may want to run a heavier oil or additive like Lucas if the oil pan is clean also. These magnums are likely the last motor that has the clearance to allow heavier oil run back too the oil pan. If that helps the noise, it absolutely is the bearings. You might just want to try and change the oil and filter before you do too much else though. If your confident it is the rod bearings, use the heavier oil too. Lifters tick, rods knock.

i had this same problem with my 98 dakota with the 318 magnum and i just recently started tearing the motor down and found the main bearings were worn out. so i replaced the bearings and the crank shaft and problem went away. hope this info helps

sure sounds like bearings to me. my buddy just picked up a 99 durango with a rod knock, it was horrible when you 1st fired it up but it would kinda go away, when we drove it out to his ma's place to swap the motor, oil pressure would occasionaly drop and come back up. i got the motor for a core to build a 390 strocker out of, when i started tearin it down to just the bare block, the #1 connection rod bearing was gone and the crank jurnual was wore down

as far as the earlyer question of Ting in so you can use both pressure sending unit and the micanical i would just to be sure. but one thing I do know about some 5.9's they do have problems with oiling and main bearings my dads 95 2500 4x4 blew main bearings 3/1 at 109,000. that was with reg dealer service from the time it was new.

Bad rod bearing will cause a knock, but it will not cause a drop in oil pressure. If the main bearings are bad it will definately cause you to lose oil pressure at idle. I wou ldnt drive it any more than I would have to. But depending on how long your main bearings have been bad, it will cause many other problems too with the clearence the crank has

my brother's 95 2500 did the same thing. To a tee, it was 1/3 main bearing had both gone bad. They had worn to the brass and started to seze up.

just as an aside

My 96 had the same drop in oil pressre and oil light illumination when i stopped (absent of any knocking noise you hear).

I just changed the oil pressure sensor and that fixed the drop in pressure and oil light at stops. While the knocking is definatly a concern, the sensor is the cheapest troubleshooting without tearing down a motor.

i guess what im saying is that the "drop" in oil pressure may not be related to any engine knock you hear on startup.
