For me, a 120lb dog seems to do the trick for the majority of people.. He scared a pizza delivery guy into dropping my food just last week! You really can't beat a dog when it comes to protecting your home/family.

As for the guns, I don't know about you guys, but I keep my shotgun under my bed. In his case, that would have hurt him (The guy was in his bedroom!). I generally keep a handgun handy (Computer/TV, go figure? lol) that I carry with me. I tend to opt for 45 ACP as do most (Glaser Blue Dots in my EDC, Coron DPX in my Sig which stays in my truck).

As for shotguns and home defense, two things that I haven't seen stated in this thread. DON'T GO STOCKLESS!! Yes it seems like it would be easy to handle, but they aren't nearly as accurate, less so when you need it.

Secondly, find an SBS if it's allowed. Where I live, if you pay the taxes and wait the allotted time, you can own a lot of things you wouldn't normally think possible.. I have a Mossberg 590A1 SBS (14") it's amazing for those hard-to-reach dirtbags :P

I also tell people to stock up on roach spray as stated above. It's way more effective than mace, even if it doesn't burn they won't be able to see. That one's even good for offices (My Ex was a teacher, I made her keep a can in her desk ).

Once I get my family moved to Vegas, the first line will be a monitored home alarm system. If that doesn't deter them...S&W Bodygard with laser site, Glock26 with laser, and the new Mossberg 500 with taclight(wife and son are schooled and competent with all 3). I also have two dogs that will freak if someone tries to enter the house....granted, Pommeranians aren't exactly attack dogs, but they make great alarms. lol
I fully intend in investing in a trained German shepperd, but since I will be overseas for awhile, I'd rather wait until I'm actually around to bond with the dog.
Lastly, as far as the wife in a rental house...location, neighborhood, and home layout will be researched before we move.
Some people may think I'm a bit paranoid...maybe...but I think just as everyone should have a fire escape plan, they should have a worst case scenario plan. For me, my son and wife know the safest rooms in the house, which rooms have locks, even a gamelplan if someone kicks in the front door...where the guns and flashlights are located, etc...
I Really like the idea of the roach spray.

Nothing beats a gun on your waist...even at home. The #1 rule in a gun-fight is: BRING A GUN. You could have been murdered with the pull of a trigger had this idiot been ready and armed. In my house that intruder would have probably been breathing his last breath as soon as I realized he was there. You are lucky my friend.

I will be using the 'layered defense theory'....one layer of lead at a time.
