Default O/D Question

I have a 2002 Ram 1500 quad cab long bed with the 5.9, 4-speed auto, 3.92 gears and towing package. I remember someone saying on here one time that these transmissions will be destroyed if you tow/haul anything with O/D on. Well I have towed some fairly heavy loads before in the 5-7k pound range and I turned the O/D off because I knew the tranny would be under a lot of stress with the heavy loads. Well I just bought a 6X14' utility trailer that weighs about 1200 unloaded and I will be using it mainly to haul two, maybe three four wheelers and for occasional scrap hauling and landscaping work. I imagine I will be towing mostly in the 2-3k pound range. So my question is do I need to turn the O/D off when towing such a small amount of weight? I love the way the truck performs with the O/D off, but anyway I can try to save some gas mileage on this gas hog without destroying anything I will definitely do. Thanks for the help.

If your tranny starts downshifting to 3rd from overdrive too frequently (climbing hills, headwind etc.) Then it would be wise to lock out the overdrive. Part of the problem on the 4 speed trannys is poor fluid flow (cooling) in the overdrive component of the transmission. This is what i have gathered from reading different comments on different forums over the years.

It's not just the weight, but also aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance. The stockers simply cannot handle it and will burn up (and that's in a unit that has the easy part, after achieving speed and overcoming inertia). Even if you don't fry the thing, you will drastically shorten useful life.

Lol the way I was always told, was as long as you got some weight back there, whether that be towing or even a significant amount of weight in the bed, stay safe and turn your O/D off. All us dodge guys know how temperamental our transmissions can be... Haha
