Default Non-ethanol fuel -vs- 10% ethanol fuel

Today I completed one portion of a test comparing the two. I started by running two full tanks of non-ethanol gas before starting this test. I filled up last week with a tank of non-ethanol and drove fairly conservatively 352 miles for an average mpg of 18.0 actual. The EVIC reported 18.3 mpg, but I never trust it. I always calculate it myself.

Today, I filled up with 19.5 gallons of 10% ethanol gas on top of the remaining non-ethanol. I plan to run two tanks of this gas then start the test again using only 10% ethanol gas. I would prefer to run a few tests to see consistency, but I'm too impatient to wait.

From past experience (in my Dakota) I gained between 0.6 and 1 mpg by switching to the 100% gas. Another observation I noticed was during the summer I average roughly 2 mpg better. I don't know if it's because of the "summer blend" or just due to the temperature. I tend to believe it's based on the temperature and the engine adding less fuel. When the engine sees colder temps it increases the fuel thus increasing the fuel consumption. This is just my opinion though.

I will post my results in a couple weeks.

Looking forward to your results, I have always thought ethanol reduces mileage, plus it evaporates much quicker especially in older carburated vehicles which I have, but we are stuck with it here in California.

I cannot wait to see your results! If I knew how to give rep points I would give you some, the snowmobile forum I am on has a ton of stuff like this about ethanol vs. non Ethanol but mostly for performance not fuel economy... I dont run ethanol fuel in my sled, I could but I dont.... Will be interesting to see if the cost difference to buy E vs. Non E is worth the switch for fuel economy

Ethanol-blended fuel has approximately 2/3 of the energy of conventional gasoline. As weird as it may sound Ethanol adds oxygen to the fuel and as a result gives you a cleaner burn (lower emissions), However with our newer engines being all computer controlled the fuel management system will see this increase in oxygen output, think it's in a lean burn condition then push more fuel. Now according to the fuel manufacturers this should only mean a 1-2% increase in fuel consumption.
I think those numbers are pretty close as I don't notice a huge difference in mileage running an ethanol blend vs. no ethanol.

I use this website to see local stations that sell 100% gas. Hope it helps!

ok, I completed the study today. I drove 262 miles and filled up with 15.6 gallons today. My mpg comes up to 16.7 mpg while using the 10% ethanol gas versus the 18 mpg with 100% gas. Id like to repeat the study to validate it, but this pretty much matches my results when I did it using my Dakota.

At a cost of approximately an extra 10 cents per gallon for the 100% gas versus the 10% ethanol gas, it seems like a good investment to continue using the 100% gas because of the extra miles I'm able to get from each tank. Is it earth shattering....nope, but hopefully it helps others make choices that help them.

Ethanol gas has a shelf life of only 3 months, its harder on 2 stroke engines, dries up some plastic and swells up o-rings thus all marinas here in the north only use reg gas

I plan too, but I've already done it multiple times in my Dakota(in my orignal post) and the results were identical. Hands down during the summertime I get right at 2 mpg better. I can tell within 2 weeks when the "summer blend" of gas is in use as my mpg's start increasing.

Speaking of summer blend, when will stations start putting it in the pumps?
