Default Mopar Bed Extender Installation Question

Hello - newbie to the board and hoping I can get some help. The problem is hard to explain but here goes: I'm installing the Mopar bed extender on my 2010 Ram (no RamBox). I have reached the bottom of page 4 in the following instructions (also attached)

http://www.dealershipaccessories.com...pdfs/da301.pdf

and cannot figure out if when I rotate the metal bracket as it shows in step 8 if it should rotate freely (and fall off when I let go) or it should be difficult if not possible to rotate. It's almost like the bracket is a round shape and the post it rotates around is oval. I know this doesn't make much sense if you haven't installed one but hopefully there's someone on here who knows what I'm talking about. Thanks!

i read the instructions and here is my best guess.... it appears that the post is oval and when the bracket is installed on the truck the post should drop all the way into the bracket. when using your extender it would just rotate in the truck and onto the tailgate . i think the main reason the post is oval is when you want to take the extender out of the truck you would roate it half way and just pull up on the extender thus releasing it from your truck. hope that makes sense ,if not at least this will bump it back to the tiop of the forums and you may get more input .

I have one and installed it myself. The post is oval so that it cannot be removed from a horizontal position (either extended on the tailgate or flipped back into the bed as a bed-divider). This feature, coupled with your locking tailgate, keeps the bed extender secure without the need of a tonneau or other cover. With the tailgate locked, the bed extender cannot swing into the 12 o'clock position which is the only way the post can be removed from the bracket (without cutting it!).

I hope that helps. I love mine. Rarely use it as an extender but like the way it keeps small loads from moving too far forward under the tonneau during transit. Good luck.

Barnyard - I understand what you are saying, it's just impossible for me to rotate the bracket around the post as I think it should in step 8. When I try this the oval shape of the post forces the bracket down and it ends up falling if I let go. I've attached a few pictures going from step 7 to 8. If I let go in the last picture the bracket falls off. It looks like from step 8 the post should be completely locked in and I should be able to let it go without falling. When your extender is either rotated into your bed or onto your tailgate, does the post and bracket look like picture 3? This doesn't seem very secure to me as the post is not really locked into the bracket.

I'd have to see the post itself (underneath that button head) to be sure.

You might try mounting the bracket to a scrap 2x4, clamping that to your workbench or something else solid and trying the extender's operation that way. I'm assuming you're checking things out BEFORE you drill the holes in your bed posts, correct? If not, install the bracket and check function that way.
