I think a temporary (cheap) fix might be what I'm after. Maybe I'll trade the truck in at the same Dodge dealer I purchased it from. I don't see the point in sinking any money into a 10yr old, 2wd truck, especially since it has a poorly designed, underpowered engine. Shame on Dodge for not issuing a recall for the issues these trucks have. I'll certainly remember it when making my next purchase.

Hi friends, I have the almost the exact issue as gvangerven describes except the engine runs a little rough and I'm getting a service engine message to replace my gas cap.
Gvangerven, Id love to know if you found a blown head gasket, crack or other engine damage and if so, how did you fix it (rebuild, replace, stop leak)?
I really appreciate any info you share.

Heres my symptoms, Id say it a lot like you described.

I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota with a 4.7L 8cyl engine (80K Miles)
Recently I am loosing cooling fluid and sometimes see white vapor coming out of my exhaust (especially when engine is cold).
Engine runs a little rough like its missing in a cylinder
Check-engine light stays on, I forget the code but it wants me to replace the gas cap which I did
Didnt check the compression
No discoloration on the plugs
No water in the oil
Cannot find any leak with dye and a black light.

Thanks,
Rick from Lakeland, Fl

Well, in the future anyone looks at this post, I found my problem was a blown head gasket at cylinder 1 between the cylinder and water path. The way I found it was to remove the ignition relay, completely fill the radiator and remove one spark plug at a time. With all the spark plugs in place I saw a lot of bubbles in the coolant while trying to start the engine. When I pulled plug 1 out, all the bubbles stopped. I re-installed plug 1 and went to 2. In every case except for with plug 1 removed I saw bubbles in the coolant. After I pulled the head I found a blown gasket and some etching on the head. The local machine shop charged me $50.00 to resurface it. I suspect Gvangerven would have found something similar. -Rick
