Question K&N CAI install

ok installed the 77 series K&N CAI yesterday on my 2011 ram 5.7 and i noticed that the K&N heat shield doesn't quite match up with the air inlet opening in the fender well there's a gap. is this normal or did i do something wrong, i installed it exactly to manufacturers specs.

There is a slight gap, it seemed to me that it was to allow air to also come in possibly from around the headlight housing

If you have the same one I do I think it's to allow more air to come up from behind the headlight and inner fender
