Question Back up Cam for towing

Anybody using a backup cam for towing. I tow a 19' boat and I'm thinking it'll be nice when I'm hooking up solo. I haven't taken delivery yet so I'm not sure of the cam location on the back. Can you use it for backing up to hook up the trailer? Does it work in the dark? Can you see fish if you back down the ramp too far? It will be paired with the 430N.

Hello Ramcrew,

I have the back-up camera on my 2011 Outdoorsman and it is located near the tailgate handle just to the left of the tailgate lock. I pull a 21 ft. Travel Trailer but have not yet successfully hitched up by myself using the camera - my wife is my guide and she does a great job plus I only hooked up once last year after buying the RAM. I did notice though that depending on the location and brightness of the sun it was difficult for me to see the hitch clearly that 1 time I did hitch up. The camera does seem to be oriented well enough to show you the truck's receiver ball and the trailer's front hook-up.

Also, the camera does work well in the dark from my experience and I use it quite a bit when backing up in the dark.

One thing that I also noticed is that the back-up sensor system is a pain when you have a trailer hooked up and you are backing up with it - it senses the trailer of course and is giving you the too close BEEPs so you have to disengage the back-up sensor system temporarily unless you like this annoying sound.

Oh yah - if you are seeing fish in the monitor you will probably be feeling water in your boots and you are in deep do do by then.

Happy trailering.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll still use the brick method for solo trailer hook-up!

I use mine to hook to my bass boat every weekend. I can clearly see the top of my ball and put it under the receiver every time. for those sunny days I painted the top of my ball hi vis orange

I use it for hooking up. I totally missed the first time, got out and looked and figured out how it was supposed to look and have been successful every time since.

My truck disables the back up sensors when a trailer is connected. Do you have a built in brake controller Canuck? I think that is what tell it to shut off the beeper

Hi Bikenut,

You make a great point in that Ramcrew should try hooking up with his camera to really understand the symantics of the view, etc.. I'm sure he will be successful hooking up like you have been.

Funny, my truck does have the built in factory Brake Controller but it does not automatically disengage the back-up sensors when the wiring is hooked-up to the trailer. I do however have a button on the centre dash that allows me to disengage the back-up sensor system quickly and that's what I have been using.

Works great dead nutz every time on the hitch.

I wish my park assist shut off by them self. I was told by dodge awhile back that that was one thing they were working on. All the 11's do not shut off by them self. From what I have seen. I did not know the 12's were already doing this.

I can say that the back up beepers do not like my hitch when I'm not towing lol! Thats why I figured the brake controller being hooked up was the trigger to shut them off

I've used a back up camera (first on my F150) and now on my Ram for over two years and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread for hooking up. I pull a 6x10 enclosed utility trailer and a smaller 5x10 flatbed trailer for my golf cart. I live alone (and since I can't train the cat to help) hooking up solo is the only option. The camera makes this a snap - with practice on the view you'll hit the mark every time and never have to get in, get out, get in - moe the truck, get out look and all that routine again. Would not be without a back up camera!!
