Default Lost a friend a while back...

And just found out about it today I wondered why I had not heard from him in a while. We were like brothers in Iraq in OIF 06-08. We were inseparable. He had my back and I had his. We saved each others asses on more than one occasion. I remember laying under his humvee, covered head to toe in grease and grime from changing a transmission, discussing old cars, and old times, things we missed back home, you name it. I also remember going to get his behind when his truck broke down outside the wire, and when he hit an IED in January 2007. To think we made it out of that shit alive...just to have this happen.

http://www.odmp.org/officer/20369-de...sley-pritchard

This quote hit me hard:

Quote:
Chad, all is Code-4. Rest in peace, sir. We have it from here.
And a Poem I have picked up along my travels:

Quote:
"The Final Inspection"

The soldier stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, young soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The soldier squared himself and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry guns
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work some Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
'Cause the war was awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
And not a dime, I reaped.
I've never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, dear Soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come patrol on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

That is very unfortunate news, the circle of life is often very sad, especially when it is so unfair. Sorry for your loss and his family's loss.

I just keep reading it, over and over.

I keep thinking to myself: "A 160 foot sinkhole? Really? Man, that frickin' sucks."

I can honestly see him in my head...responding to the call. It's so weird. I have lost friends before, I am no stranger to death...why this one is kicking my ass, I dont know. I almost feel like its my fault somehow. I know there is no way in hell that its humanly possible that I could have intervened in any way, shape or form, but...doesnt keep me from feeling like it could have been prevented, somehow. I guess it just goes to show, if the good Lord wants ya, he is gonna take ya.

That is definitely a tough thing to take. It may help to know that he may forever have your back.

No one will ever know why anyone goes when they do. My Grandmother used to tell me that it was because their work here was done, and they've been promoted to a supervisory position (not in those words).

It was almost like saying they're good at what they do and now they're done, they've moved on to show others the way.

In the back of your mind on the next close call (and I hope that's far far off), remember to give Chad the thumbs up.

Very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, condolences to you and to his family. I agree with what's been said so far, but especially "that he may forever have your back."

My heart goes out to you young man. I am 100% disabled Veteran (Old School Army) and in Maine we feel strongly about honoring our Veterans and it is common to be fueling my truck and have a young person come up and thank me for serving (DV Plate on my truck) and then to find they just came back from Iraq or Afghanistan and listen to their stories. I accept their Thanks and THANK THEM, they are the future of our free world.
When I read about a soldier surviving their tour only to die at home after survivng a war zone, it tugs at my heart. It is in the news all too often. God Bless him, and you for keeping my family, and I safe.
I believe he is in a better place, I believe as a spiritual person that we are rewarded after this life. You will be reunited soon enough, this life is but a blink of an eye when you get older and look back on it. Live every day as if it were your last with goodness in your heart towards your fellow man, and you cant go wrong in my book.
Sorry if I am rambling but this is a topic near to my heart. God Bless your friend.
