Default 730 Radio Q

Hi All, I was looking at the wire I have snaking out of the glove box to my iPhone. It was aggravating me being there. So I took a chill pill and started thinking about how to fix it. In the 2012 it's a USB port and not that other funky cable port.

While running some wires for my interior lights I found there was a hole in the back of that center console dash cubby. I would like to reroute that USB port from the glove box so it goes through that cubby hole.

And actually.... thinking about it some. I would really rather wire in a dock where that cubby is.

So, the actual questions.

How does that usb port connect to the radio? Is it just a USB patch with a usb plug in the radio(please let it be that one). Or is it tied into the harness plug for the radio. Which I guess is not bad either.

Has anyone found a good dock that could be mounted there?

I'm not sure what it is, but if is tied into the harness plug, you could just plug in a longer usb cable and route it to the center console.

The 730 RHR radio has two mini USB ports in it for the auxilary inputs. I'm not sure what the previous 730 radio (RER?) has in it.

When i did my install, I bought two cables Mini USB to USB A female. This way I can plug anything usb into it, my Droid, a thumb drive, etc.. I routed one to my dash glovebox, and the other to my console box.

I dug into it yesterday actually. I was just going to post what I found. Keep in mind I have a 2012.

To remove the lower glovebox you just push on the sides and pull down.

To remove the upper glovebox you need to remove one screw at the back from underneath.

I yanked the connector from the back of the glove box and hooked up an iPhone cable to it. I taped that together and then ran the cable out the hole in the top of the cave in the center console. There's a couple pictures in this thread at the bottom of the page.

Now my normal connection is not laying out anymore. I still have the USB port in the front panel of the radio if I need to hook up something not "I".

In 2009 the RER 730N port just ran out the back of the radio, it didn't enter the glove box
a owner had to take out both glove compartments, reach in back of the radio & unwind the cord. Then they ran it where they wanted it, most ran it into the upper glove box & it just laid there. Some ran the cord through the hole where the light bulb should be, or is.
Some ran it along side of the radio & down to the tray at the lower part of the dash below the radio & climate controls.
Some applications needed an extension for the cord.
If there were an extension cord with a dual male/female plug, it would seem to be the best thing available.

As i type this, images are going through my mind.
It seems that you could easily use the panel that holds in your 115V outlet to mount the I devices port to.

I have a blue LED light there, it lights up my whole cab with a blinking light that is connected to my alarm system, everyone knows my Ram is armed, the other flashing lights are sort of hidden by Dodge, I wanted everyone to know when mine is ARMED

If you don't have 4 wheel drive, the panel opposite of the 115V outlet is a worthless cubby, you could use that to mount your I-port, i use it for my extra outside lights & a fuel pump in my auxiliary gas tank

They kept changing that setup. I know the 2011 had a special cable that had to connect to the connection inside and at the end of that cable was a USB port.

I was really just trying to keep it clean. Running that wire down to the cave was my best solution at the moment. I have been surfing docks that I can just plug the cable into and then the phone will plug easily into the cradle of the dock.
