Basically it catches a good part the crank case gasses, oils and other crud and catches it before it is fed back into your intake to be burned. Keeps your intake cleaner too

3rd gens have a different pcv setup. Ours has no hose going to it. It just twists into the intake manifold. I was talking to a guy that used to build the Ford racecar motors and he said I could modify the cc filler neck to house a traditional pcv and add a catch can that way, but he also said I should add a high flow fuel pump and 95# injectors to my stock engine to improve fuel economy. He's either brilliant or totally crazy! He does own a 2g 2500 with Viper heads and 1200HP so who knows...
