Default Grinding under 35 and no one knows why...

Howdy fellers...
So I just bought my first dodge and I grabbed it for a steal. Anywho, I have what sounds like grinding gears under 35 mph. It sounds like a manual and a powershift. Goes away after 35 but it's getting worse. On shop said pinion bearing. (yes the pinion bearing is bad but I don't think it would cause this). Another shop said bad tranny and another tech at that shop said loose tranny bands. Anyone ever hear of this? I love the new truck and want to fix her... Any help would be great!

It's not the transmission bands so don't worry about the transmission. I think it might be a faulty U-Joint, could just be that pinion bearing but usually you get a whine noise from that. The next thing I would certainly check is the carrier bearings and axle bearings. These dodges, it's not uncommon to find faulty carrier bearings.

Without being their to look at the truck it's not easy to track down a problem because it can be anything.

If this unit is 4wd, I'd be after the double cardan joint on the rear end of the front driveshaft... Zero slop allowable...

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm getting the whine now. U-joints feel tight. As bad as I hate it I think I'm going to run it by a local tranny shop and let them take a listen. I have found that if I ease into the gas under 30 then it doesn't grind that hard. Just trying to limp it thru. I will post some pics once I get the old buffed off her.

Well I took the diff cover off today and found something Ive never seen. The bearing was still intact and work fine but the race was off and spinning inside the pumpkin... Wow... Anywho it's off to the you pull it today. Found a rear end geared 3.55 with 80k on it. Gonna swap it out tonight and drive her like hell tomorrow.

Like I said it sounds like a bearing to me. Don't forget to give me some rep points, I been making hundreds of posts and getting nothing from them.

I wouldn't recommend you just rebuild your axle if you can, these chrysler 9.25 are great axles don't get me wrong I love them but when they start to see around 150K miles this is normally when the rear end starts to go out on you. But rebuild it does take some time and alot of patience. I'm wondering how you spun the race, hmm maybe it ran low on oil or a bearing seized. Could of been anything. Well hope it all goes well!

I'd be interested in hearing if the rear end is the grinding problem. My last ram was a 96 Sport 4x4, same grinding low speed at shift points, found out it was the transfer case clutches going out, but only is 2Hi........4 wheel was ok......anyways, good luck!
