The cables look like about 1/4" although I didn't mic them.
I looked up the strength for regular wire rope of that size. It is good for 3 tons.
If it is aircraft cable, even more.
I don't think we have to worry about the cables themseves. The end fittings are probably the weak points.
I can't imagine what someone would be thinking of putting on his tailgate that would cause a problem.

Looks like the question was an excellent question! Means there is no real answer. I had a look to the web site links posted and in summary it says we have to keep an eye on the cables and check for their integrity.
