Default Spider webbing and swirl mark repair.

Winter has really taken a toll on the clearcoat, can you actually achieve results hand polishing or am I going to have to invest in a good orbital polisher?

What are the best methods for restoring the clear coat to the factory shine?

I have Meguiars Scratch X as well as Ultimate compound.

The other question I have is, is how much is too much. I know you can burn through the clear using too much compound. Need some tips to get the factory shine back.

You can try the scratchx but I'll bet it won't do the trick.

Ultimate Compund is way overkill for swirls.

I use Meguiars #83 with a PC & Polishing Pad then follow with #9 and Finishing Pad.

Then Wax with Collonite #845.

I do this once a year, every spring.

It takes an entire weekend but the paint looks like new again.

Oh yeah, don't try to do this without one of these.

It really is about impossible to harm your finish with a DA, the worst you can do is go too aggressive with your cutting and then your paint will look hazy.

You will have to gradually step down the abrasiveness until the haze is gone.

I always start off with very little cut, and step up until I get the results I want.

agreed on the porter cable polisher...impossible to damage paint. you wont get rid of swirls without one...well at least not as well or as quickly. it is definitely worth the couple hundred dollar investment in pads and machine.

im partial to the wolfgang product line and have had great results, (looking to try menzerna next) but i used to use meguiars with no complaints before i found the wolfgang.

I have tried the ultimate polish and liked it, but i dont think it will really replace a good swirl remover and polish after.

remember, once you do the swirl and polish once really well, hit the paint with a polymer or acrylic sealer. this will last six months or more and protect your paint better than just waxing alone (this should also make you feel better about burning through the clear). you can also top coat the sealer with a good carnuba to make an even richer deeper shine. colonite or nattys blue are very good. it is a four step process, but man you will love it. it took me 14 hours to do my ram in the fall..but it still looks good.

the important thing to remember is that the good stuff you order from an online retailer really isnt that much more expensive than the OTC stuff from your local auto parts store.
