I dont think you will be unsatisfied with a Tom or a Garmin if this is your first stand alone unit. I prefer the Garmin due to my familiarity with the layout. I chose my 430n specifically for the Garmin nav built in.

The traffic updates are so-so and tend to be slightly delayed and are often not as relevant if you are not in a larger city. Lifetime maps is the way to go though. a 4" screen should be plenty.

Guess I should update this thread - I went with a Garmin (exact model escapes me at the moment) and I'm lovin' it. Hard wired power cable into the dash so it's on-off with the key. Mounted it on the dash with the suction cup aided by some 3M double stick tape. I can still pop the unit out of the mount and store it to protect against theft. Automatic map upgrades are nice too. Great choice.
