Default Heavy Duty Transmission Oil Cooler?

We bought a 29 foot trailer recently. Seems fine on the (1500) truck so far, but I've been told that an aftermarket oil cooler would be a good investment.

Any opinions on the quality of these stock coolers? Is it worth upgrading to an aftermarket? And if so, any particular models to look for or stay away from?

I asked member transengineer about larger transmission coolers and he told me that all 4.7L and 5.7L 1500's have the same combo unit which is a transmission cooler/AC condenser. This includes the RT and heavy duty models. Maybe you could run another cooler before or after the factory unit, but I would just monitor the transmission temperature and only add a cooler if you are running hot. Mine usually is around 140-150 deg and it has got as hot as 180 deg when sitting in traffic for extended periods. I think when towing as long as you are moving you wouldn't even get it as hot as if you were sitting for an extended time.

I found some info on other trucks like ford and chevy and their normal trans temps seem to be over 200 deg, so I wouldn't worry about it unless you get to 200... JMO.

I was just reading about it over in DT
This is what one of their members typed
'I always watch the various temps while running on longish trips (~180 one way). Trans usually stays around 155 for the first half of the trip and rides into the high 160's for the later half and sometimes into the low 170's, but I've seen it get up to 183 in the past. Oil temp is almost always around 212, and coolant is almost always locked at 195 so I was a bit concerned this last trip coming home when it was riding at 199. Obviously 199 for coolant is not a big deal, but the change in that temp kind of surprised me.'

another wrote

I put over 3K miles on the Dodge last summer tugging a 7K+ TT and a significant amount of that travel was through the Rockies and West Coast mountains.

Peak trans temp got to about 200 on one occasion and I attributed that to a gonzo climb up a four-mile, near 20 percent grade. Otherwise the trans temp maintained at or below the OEM spec'd normal operating temperature.

My 4.7L SLT build sheet has that. And like I said, all the 1500's with v8 (and maybe even the v6) share the same transmission cooler/AC condenser. The top ~10 rows of the unit are the transmission cooler, the remaining ~60% of the unit is the AC condenser.

I see that you are also in Alberta. This is something very important to keep in mind when considering an additional trans cooler. Worse than over heating a transmission is running thick cold fluid through it (ie. at -25C). Because of the additional cooling, in the winter you run a risk of pushing thick tranny fluid through the auto trans. This thickened fluid does not get in and lubricate where it needs to. In the summer it's really a non-issue.

I run an aftermarket trans cooler in my jeep Jk but when I mounted it, I installed a 3-way ball valve that allows me to bypass the aux cooler in the winter. Very easy to do as you plumb your lines from:

Tranny (out)- ball valve - aux cooler - factory cooler -tranny (in)
- factory cooler - tranny (in)

I just swapped my tow package cooler for the 1 ton oem cooler... you can also see the comparison of the towing cooler vs the std cooler. I gave my buddy the towing cooler and took out the std cooler he was running...

The standard cooler and towing package cooler appear nearly identical...

Maybe your right. Looks to me one is about an inch wider and the other an inch taller. Also it appears there are ghosts in the bottom right of the picture...
