Mine just came on again yesterday....4 weeks and 2800 miles after the last oil change...

Is there a sensor on this thing that reads the viscosity of the oil?
or does the notification go off after so many miles?

There's no "sensor" that reads the actual condition of the oil. The oil life is supposedly calculated through some algorithm that takes into account average throttle position, average rpm, oil temperature, average mph, etc...

It is nice to have, but I wouldn't solely rely on it. You can reset the light by turning the ignition to "on" and pressing the gas pedal to the floor three times, then turning the ignition off. It won't go off on it's own.

I changed my oil at 900 miles the first time. Then I moved and towed for 1000 miles straight through the night. At 3500 miles - 500 miles after the 1k mi of towing - it told me to change the oil. I use Pennzoil Ultra synthetic. I want to get to 8k miles on the truck before the next oil change just so I can do oil changes every 4k and be on the same maintenance schedule as the manual has with the intervals being ever 8k

Read your Owners Manual

In 2009 the book reads, oil changes at 3,000 miles, except for taxis, ambulances, etc
In 2010 the book reads, oil changes at 5,000 miles, except for ................
Now the book reads, oil changes at 8,000 miles, except for ........................

They are referring to regular dinosaur oil 5W-20

I change mine at 5,000 miles or close to it, depending on the jobs that i am going to be doing, whether they are under or over 1,000 miles a round trip
I use Mobile 1 synthetic with a top brand oil filter

^I think you mean 3.92 rear? I think 3.55 and 3.92 were the choices (and 3.21).

Default oil change warning

i was wondering how the warning oil change operated, i have a 2011 2dr short box 5.7l. i tow my race car on an open trailer 3hrs each way in the summer. only have the truck 1yr this may. i have changed the oil when i received the truck because the dealer didn't know when it was changed last, now i have changed the oil twice in 10000 kms. the warning message only came on once about 2000 km after the first oil change, i reset it and have done the second oil change and still no warning message. all i see is a running clock on the information select mode on the instrument cluster. if i am reading right, there is no setting the interval of the warning message, just keep track of the 7 or 8 ths km oil change time.
