Default 730N head unit hard drive - tech question

I searched a little online but saw nothing on the radios in our trucks with hard drives. I was curious what drive they use for the 730 and 430 units? Anyone know?

I can hear mine spin up once I've unlocked the door before I start the truck or even insert the fob. Made me curious how long they last.

Then the tech side of me wondered how easy it would be to back one up - say using clonezilla or dd with linux to do a bit for bit clone as a backup image. If it ever failed, I could get a similar drive perhaps and reimage the drive and be back in business for 40-60 bucks (guessing for a 40gig drive).

Has anyone opened up their radio unit to see how easy that might be? Someone installing an add on that might chime in on how easy it looks to pull the drive from the unit?

Just curious - I'm not adventurous enough to pull the unit to look but thought someone else might have done so.

Thanks!

This is something I have been wondering as well. I also wonder if it could be replaced with a solid state drive... It would be much more durable for the long haul.

Or mod it like you could the old TiVo's. You buy a bigger drive, copy over the OS and application, and then open up the remaining drive space for use. I turned my wife's 40 hour TiVo to a 400 hour TiVo in a few hours.

I'd love to get more of my music library in there.

On one of the other forums it has been discussed, from what i recall it is a solid state drive, people replaced it with a larger drives but from what i recall it slows the start up of the unit down, they guess when you first turn the unit on it does some sort of indexing and the larger the drive the longer it takes to complete

No specific knowledge of the drive, but sometimes the amount of recognizable real estate is set in software. For example, you might install a 100GB drive, but only 30GB is seen. I'm not stating that as a fact in this situation, but I have seen it before.

Backing up is a good idea. Clonezilla, various Linux tools, and Snapshot (Windows) are all useful.
