Very easy to rebuild!
If you want I have a service/rebuild manual for the 46RE, send me your email and I'll email it to you.

As for tips, keep your eye out for the direct clutch drum inner lip seal make sure it protrudes. Also soak the frictions in transmission fluid for atleast 15 minutes, always replace the torque converter whenever you do a rebuild, always rebuild the valve body, so on so forth. Tips there are many but the tips I have are for rebuilding with limited tools.

will a tranny out of a 98 or newer cross over with my 96? and can you put a 5.9 in place of a 5.2 without changing ecu or harnesses?

Yes a 98 should work in place of a 96, now as far as newer you can only get up to 2000 to be in place of the 96. Now as for fitment the bell housing for the 318 is going to be different than the one for the 360. You can't swap from a 5.2 to a 5.9 easily, the 5.9L is externally balanced also the flex plates are different and so is the torque converter. You would have to use the 360 ECM with the 360, you can't really use the 318 ECM on the 360. The harnesses you could probably get away with though. And you're welcome for the manual.

The first thing you would need to do is have the crank assembly rebalanced because the 360 is externally balanced if you switch to a manual you need to have the engine re-balanced with the clutch. The next thing you would need is a 360 Manual ECM. You need to install a clutch pedal say the least. But that's pretty much all for the most part. The balancing and the ECM are the most important.
