The payload and weight limitations cant be altered. They are what they are. Any towing or camper site will tell you that.

That's not true... tire upgrade, spring mods will increase payload from factory specs...

my only experience is adding an airlift 1000 kit for my stock ST, I put a 900 lb motorcycle and a 350 lb lift in the back and it rode like a champ.....

I am clearly not an expert though!

Payload is gvwr minus the trucks weight
You can never altar your gvwr however you can make you truck lighter

The new SAE Towing Standard J2807 , will go into effect with the 2013 model vehicles

The rating can't be skewed by each companies engineers
they will all have to conform to the J2807 Standard

so you will be able to actually compare vehicles, like the 1/2 ton model pickups
Ram 1500, GM 1500, Ford 150, etc. against each other using this towing standard

This document establishes minimum performance criteria at GCWR and calculation methodology to determine tow-vehicle TWR for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles and trucks. This includes all vehicles up to 13 000 lb GVWR. It is recommended that the performance requirements within be adopted for all vehicles with model year designation 2013 or later.

It is about damn time too
