Damn, Dude. Now there's something I didn't know. Thanks. I'll have to whip that one over beers one day and impress the ladies.

Your truck antenna is based on the center of this band (98Mhz) which has a wavelength of just a bit over 10feet.

Because we really don't want a 10' antenna, we have the option of using a 1/2 wave or 1/4 wave antenna. Even at 5' (1/2 wave), we would be unhappy with it sticking up that high so the manufactures opted for 1/4 wave antenna which at 98Mhz is 30-1/8" long. A 1/4 wave antenna must be mounted to a ground plane. Because we mount the antenna on the fender, the ground plan is not correct in all directions which is why you can lose reception by turning a corner when in a fringe area, and also why the reception is different between driving away from or toward a radio station.

Once you reduce the antenna length below the 1/4 wave design, you loose reception in a hurry, and the usable distance is reduced exponentially the shorter the antenna gets.

In glass antennae line the GM vehicles used to use are a different animal, as they are setup as a 1/2 wave dipole. Although this should work better (and no ground plane is required) they are horizontally polarized. Unfortunately, not all FM stations broadcast in both vertical and horizontal polarization (they all broadcast in vertical), so the fender mounted antenna appears to work more consistently.

If that doesn't impress them, you just have to discuss the mutual benefits of a good 'Ram'.

In Shaunavon, Saskatchewan it is a moot question because everyone listens to SAT radio. AM and FM are crap reception. I painted my stock antenna the same color as the truck, but will go with a stubby when I find one I like.

Amplified Hidden Antenna

I was thinking of going this route, but too much work for something so minor.
Well minor for me, that is
But I was close to grabbing this one

Think I'll do the stubby and just plug my phone into IHEARTRADIO....this'll take care of all reception problems.... but I only listen to the radio when the kids are in the truck.... satellite the rest...lol

Will the short antenna damage the radio?

Not at all. The only thing is you will lose some signal strength so your radio range will be reduced......significantly.
