I had a RCSB 05 Sport 4x4 with 3.92/LSD and with only a borla cat back on it. It was stupid fast. No truck should ever be able to go that fast. It was downright scary to drive sometimes because of how badly it handled. If you hit 1/4 throttle through pretty much any turn, you were sideways. Pavement, ice, water, didnt matter the road surface, you were sideways.

My 09 4.7 is ALMOST as fast (maybe a little faster actually), but doesnt feel anywhere near as dangerous. I truly believe this as to do with the suspension enhancements made to the rear end. Going from leaf springs to a 4-link coil setup did WONDERS for how this truck handles its power. Willing to bet the 4th gen Hemi's are even better.

Indeed. This was the primary reason I was OK with the 4.7. Its not the gutless 235hp motor it was 5 years ago.

Not quite. The hemi does have a 35hp/45tq advantage. With all else being equal (gears, tires, etc) I think that is plenty enough to give the nod to the hemi. However, as Sean, pointed out, a fourth gen 4.7 with a Superchips is a different story.

I agree that the 4.7 it's a good engine and the fourth gens are competitive. That being said, ill repeat what I have said before. The third gen 4.7 has no business in a nearly three ton truck. 2wd reg cab...maybe. Dakota...sure. Not a 4wd quad cab.

Just depends how you are using it, if you want to go fast the older 4.7L doesn't really do that well. It is still a good truck engine though, enough torque to pull some weight.

I dont know man...I have driven 3rd gen 4.7s, and it was totally anemic. If all you need a truck for is to put shit in the bed and beat it around the construction site at 10 mph, ok I could see it...but if you put 4 people in the truck with luggage or gear to go anywhere, you are better off walking. Trust me, it'll be faster.

In the Dak it was a different story, but even in the durango the 4.7 was just enough.

The redesign unlocked 70hp or so. That right there tells you just how dialed back the engine was in terms of power. Other (import mostly) manufacturers with V8's in the 4.7L range are WELL over 300 horse. Hell, The Toyota 4.3L V8 that debuted in 2002 was almost 300 and the 4.6 and 4.7L that came out after that were 355 and 370 respectively.

They could get nearly 400hp out of the 4.7 with DOHC (which it desperately needs) and VVT-i or something similar.

Yeah they were low on hp but still had 295lb ft of torque. My dad's single cab 2005 4.7L pulls a few thousand pounds just fine, just not fast. Mine pulls slightly better, and gets better mpg, and is faster, but he doesn't care about speed.

Maybe something was wrong with the 07 I drove when I was looking for mine, because it almost killed me merging onto the interstate.
