Default Front Wheel U Joint Rattle

I have a 2006 Ram 3500 with a 5.9 cummins. I notice when driving through town a rattle that sounds like the old card in the bike spoke trick we used to do when kids. I jacked up the rear axle and rotated the wheels, no noise at all. Started up the vehicle and let the power train turn the wheels. Again no noise. I then raised the front left wheel off the ground and rotated the wheel. The only noise heard is a rattle coming from behind the wheel. I looked into the u joint area and found the joint to be tight but there is slight movement from side to side. The noise seems to come from this joint. I checked the other side and it is exactly the same with the same noise. Is this normal for these vehicles or am I seeing early failure of the u joints ? Any other ideas please let me know.

Thanks,

Might not be the u-joints . Could be a shifting or loose brake pad . Drive it again and when you hear the noise apply the brakes a little and see if the rattling goes away . Let me know . Talk to ya soon . Tom

Hey Tom, thanks for the info but I did try that and the noise doesnt change. However I have found out when I put into 4wd the noise goes away. This would seem to support the u-joint theory I have because putting into 4wd applies constant torque to the joints. If you have any additional ideas I would be greatly appreciative if you would pass them on. Any Idea where to get a good service manual for these vehicles ? Looks like I will be doing some work on mine. Also do u know if any special lubricant is required for diff fluid changes and for cooling system flushes. I understand that chrysler uses a HOAT antifreeze in these trucks.
Regards,

Randy
