Default Clutch life? How long.

Ok I have an 01 x cab 5.2 with no mods and babied all of its life by looks and miles,135,000. I don't tow much with truck if at all dosnt leave pavement. And if I do tow its a pop up or small trailer. How long can I expect it to last? Want to know from those who use the truck harder then I do. Thanks

The impossible question... However, you will know you're getting near the end when you no longer have any free play at the top of your pedal. You're done when you're doing 70 MPH and you nail it, and you get slippage, then you'll have to stay in town. I torched a clutch down on I-40 years ago, at 75 MPH, it would slip under acceleration, but in a rest area I could still burn rubber in 2nd gear. Amazing how much horsepower it took to push that old 79 F-250 through the wind. I made it to upper MI with that clutch, but had to squeeze very carefully all the rest of the way home.

Mine so far is in great shape. And ive had a clutch in a v6 dakota that lasted till the 150,000 range. Its was my brothers truck first, he beat it to death. So I just wanted to see an average life spain for this truck. Never had a v8 with a clutch.

Friday the 13th... you guessed it, the throwout bearing went.
It started with a faint water pump esk squeal... this soon turned to a loud dry/seized bearing squeal, followed by the clutch peddle dropping to the floor as I pulled up at work.

Since dropping the transmission is a bigger task, it pays to replace everything whilst you're in there... so this weekend is replacing the throwout bearing, spigot bearing, slave cylinder, and clutch plate.
The clutch plate probably has another 10,000 miles left on it, so that would put it at ~160,000 miles total life if I took it to the end, but I don't want to drop the tranny again in 10,000 miles, so it's all being done now.

There's a lot of variables that affect clutch life.

Typical expectation is 75k - 150k for a clutch. (In 3...2...1, someone is going to post that they got 500k on the stock clutch).

135k? In my opinion, you're on borrowed time. Change it when you can (at your convenience), rather than waiting for it to go. When they go, they usually pick the worst time...

YMMV, as always.

When I got mine it was the final nail in the coffin at 171.000 and the previous owner decided to scrap the truck. It darn sure looked like the original clutch and was WELL past it's prime. It may have been done once before but then that only puts about an 85K average on the truck, so I'm pretty sure it was the original.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it so I guess it fared better'n average which happened to be a good thing for me...I think.

Clutch life is really going to be heavily dependent on the driving style/technique... if you ride the clutch a lot, it will have a far shorted life expectancy.

I'm pretty much it's in or it's out... not much feathering... I always downshift for engine braking, and this got me 94,000 miles on the original front brakes... I'm still on the original rear brakes.

After last weekends clutch change, it's taken best part of this week for the new one to bed in, and feel good again... but I'm now back to normal.
