Default Transmission rattle

My daughters 2002 V6 manual makes a rattling sound when the clutch is engaged and the tranny is put in gear. Would this be a throwout bearing? Can be put in gear and driven, but makes a rattling sound while driving. I'm not to bad of a mechanic, but if it is this, can thisrepair be done at home with a shop manual and a good set of tools? Thanks for any idea's, Cman.
