Default Dodge Ram 2500...2004-07

Hello, i'm new here and i've been reading around and decided to join so i could ask some questions and get a little help. I am wanting to buy anywhere from a 2004 to a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 quad cab short or long bed Cummins 5.9L diesel. I am wanting to get it with under 150k miles so i can have it for a long time. But i am also wanting to do a lot in mods so i can get the best gas mileage possible...but i also plan on lifting it 6-10 inches and putting 20 inch XD monster rims and 35'' or 37'' Nitto mud/trail grapplers, and i know that will hurt it a lot. But with a cold air intake, dual exhaust maybe stacks, a chip and or programmer, all the gauges/pods, and whatever else...please help me with what will help improve gas mileage as much as possible after the lift and tires. thank you!!

Hey there...

It seems like things have been pretty slow around here lately, so I'll hop in with my 'experience' to try to help..

You are right.. your tire selection will not help your fuel mileage. What do you want out of it for mileage?

My 06 5.9 3500 MC gets 16-18mpg on the highway. I have a k&n intake/filter, stock height, BFG ATKO 265/70/17 tires... I was hoping for 20+ but all things considered for the size of the truck, I've learned to be very happy about the fact I'm not getting 5mpg.

I have a BullyDog Tripple Dog and have not found it has helped with my mileage at all. I don't know if you could find a programmer that improves the mileage enough to pay for the programmer.

The historical stories about the 5.9 getting 25+mpg, where due in part to the truck being lighter, and there was less environmental crap restricting their performance. Its a different game we play now...

I have an 06 Ram 2500 with 5.9. I recently installed an Edge Products Juice with Attitude looking to increase mileage. However, I am still “playing” with it but have a feeling that I bought a very expensive fishing weight.

My 2007 2500 four door six speed with a 5.9 is getting 20 mpg highway here in north east. I have edge j/a set on mileage, with a 4"turbo back and 5" tip. Still has stock air for now, and 265/70/12.50 tires.

If you picked up 1 mpg with your Juice, I'd be impressed.. having a quadcab, its a little lighter than my MC, so you getting 20mpg is definitely believable... I've also found if I bring my BFG TAKOs up to max psi, I can get a little more mpg... the wear on the tires I figure would negate any mpg improvements..

Your 4" exhaust, is same as stock... your 5" Tip, won't do much for mileage..

If you think about the stats, truck weight, lack of aerodynamics, and the drive-train rotating mass, the fact we aren't getting GPM, is amazing..

Well ill give ya some advice too i guess. Our 04.5 we just put on the new edge CTS and we gained exactly 1.4 mpg , until the edge crapped out and now we are on our 2nd edge box. From my experiences with our cummins and we have 2 now but have had 6+ . My best experiences for setup and mileage have been this .
S&B CAI
Smarty jr or Smarty SR
4" turboback straight piped exhaust
FASS Platinum

We have run this setup on my 03,04,05,06 and consistantly across the board got 13-16mpg pulling and 21mpg hwy. We tried K&N filters but they let way to much dirt into turbo and ended up screwwing a couple up. Went to a diesel shop around here and the guy said throw the K&N away they dont work good for diesels and do more damage than good. So we started running the S&B and loved it. Completely sealed box and doesnt let any dirt in. As for the EDGE products i have noticed our EGTS skyrocket when pulling heavy and with the smarty we never saw above 1150. So hope this helps but we have tried a ton of combos and the setup above is what seemed to work the best for us in all our trucks

Got an 06 5.9L with a 6" lift and 37"tires with 20" rims. Tires are nittos grapplers, also have the banks six gun tuner with the sealed ram air box and programmer, I get about 18-21 hwy depending on where I'm at, but to be honest I don't see too many other trucks like mine out there. I wouldn't go over 6" lift though if I were u cause shit starts to break quick like ur steering linkage and ball joints which I've had to replace. Plus it starts to put a strain on ur driveshaft too. Diesels look way bigger with lifts compared to ur gas trucks anyways.

My 04 2500 CC diesel with a K&N filter gets 27.2 highway based on the overhead console. The key is to pretend there is an egg between your foot and the pedal. This was done driving around the beltway of DC. The truck has 150k miles and purrs like a kitten.

The overhead is notorious for being way off. The only way to get an accurate reading is to hand calculate it. My overhead told me I was getting 22.5mpg on my last trip, hand calculated it came out to 16.7mpg.
Same drive my overhead was reading 16.5mpg when hand calculated I was getting 14.5 (towing)...so there is a bit of variation.
While driving it easy on the highway will net more mpg, id be surprised if you actually get more then the low 20's on the highway.
