Default Ford Escape Fatal Accident

Ford may have made a very large mistake

They had a Recall about the throttle cable & told the dealerships to fix it
Ford did not tell them how to go about fixing it
Many of the Recalls were done incorrectly & it caused another problem

Here is the story, as far as it has developed, it is on just about all the news stations

it is sad but people should think if the throttle is stuck turn the car off or bump it into neutral and it will stop.

Like so many thing out there, we are looking for someone to blame rather then a solution to the problem. In this case Ford has a responsibility, but shouldn't we as a society point out the obvious to all drivers that turning off the ignition will shut the car off. Or maybe we should get everyone to have their vehicle serviced so the brakes will stop it. If the brakes are even 1/2 good, they will out perform an Escapes engine and stop it.

Sorry for the rant/cynicism, but it reals irks me when we as a society are not willing to take responsibility for our own actions. We will go to the ends of the earth to find someone else to blame, but don't want to take 10 minutes to educate ourselves on how to be smart/safe about something we are about to partake in.

If is unfortunate that this young girl lost her life, but it could easily have been avoided regardless of Ford's involvement or lack thereof.

I had a '96 Cougar XR7 and at acceleration across an intersection in a rural area, the throttle stuck.

Initial reaction was to hit the brakes...however, with the ABS kicking in. The car is taking off like a bat out of hell, the ABS pump is making the brake pedal jump up-n-down, and the rear end during this is trying to tell the front end to get the heck out of the way.

About 4 1/2-5 seconds into this ride the car got unpleasantly acquainted with a tree about 200 feet later @ about 40/45 mph where a placard could be placed marking the spot of it's demise.

For me, by the time the ride ended, there was so much going on and I didn't even get the chance to react further.

Had I been on a straight-of-way I may have reached for the key and then applied the emergency brake or braked to a stop.

Edit: Also my first and only run-in with the taste of air-bags.

I kind of agree that in that short period of time these things happen depending on the circumstances a collision may be unavoidable. Remember that when you turn off the ignition you will loose power steering and the steering wheel and shifter may in fact lock making a bad situation even worse.
