Default Windshield swap

Last winter I slid off the road and rolled my '90 D150 4x4, (318 EFI, 4 speed auto, NP205 twin stick, 8k lb Ramsey winch, air compressor, etc.,) It came to rest with the drivers door against a tree, frame bent, cab twisted on its mounts, body purdy well FUBAR. The heavy duty ladder rack probably saved my life. I somehow walked away without a scratch...

My brother in law gave me his old firewood truck, a '85 D100 4x4, 318, 4 speed stick, 4.1:1 gears, very rusty. But I can fix most of that.

The problem area is right above the windshield on the DS, its rusted out purdy bad. I plan to cut the section of the roof out of my 90 and stitch weld it into the cab of the 85.

Is there any way to remove the windshield without cutting up the gasket/ weathertrim? I was surprised to find the seal cost more then a windshield, between $75 and $169.oo!!! It looks like it might be cheaper to just get a new windshield installed then try to fix it myself, the prob being I'm on an almost 0 dollar budget...

Anybody do this before? if so any tips??

My 90 and my new-old 85

your looking at alot more than some stitch welding, do the body lines of the doors even match up between those years? as far as the gasket goes, I mainly work on chevy's and on their windsheild gaskets there was a lil chrome piece that "capped" the ends of the gasket. but thats GM. good luck!

There's a lock ring inside the gasket. If you look at it from the front you'll see the little raised section about 3/8 inch wide. pull that lock ring out of the gasket all the way around the windshield. Now you should be able to fold the gasket back far enough to see the edge of the glass. Spray it with WD-40 (Glass edge) all the way around. The glass will pop out if you push it out carefully.

I've removed about 200 of 'em working at the scrap yards and haven't broken one yet.

You probably have the one vehicle that anyone can do...If it were a book, it'd be a "See Spot" book.

The FUBAR '90 looks like it has the "Chrome" lock ring in the gasket but it's hard to tell with the $0 picture (). If it is, then that's the ring you want to pull out of the windshield gasket.

The bodies are identical, the only difference being the logo on the tailgate and the plastic part of the grill.

I'v already cut up the fenders making patch panels and stitch welded them together. (made two out of four)Stitch welding may not be pretty but I'm not too interested in looks at this point. I have done this sort of thing before (except for the windshield remove & install) so I'm comfortable with this sort of project.

I remember my Dad (1918 - 2005) telling me about using a piece of rope to install and remove windshields with this sort of seal, but I'v never seen it done.

Ok, that's what I was curious about. My Dad mentioned using a piece of rope, but that was a long time ago.

I'll give the WD40 trick a try! Thanks.

The rope trick isn't for this one.

You have a two piece gasket on the truck. Go look at it and try to pop the clip off in the bottom center of the windshield and you'll see the ends of the inner lock ring on the two piece gasket.

The rope trick works better for back windows, and I'd be happy to explain it...after we confirm that you have a two piece gasket with the inner lock ring...

Yer move...

Yep, there's a center piece which pulls out easily, and with a little wiggling goes right back in!

Makes it a whole new game doesn't it.

I can explain the whole rope trick, but once you pull the ring, the inner edge folds back far enough to lube the glass and coax it out the front. going back in is the same. Put the gasket in place, set the glass in the gasket, and then work the lock ring back in.

Thanks! that'll save me some $$!

If you ever visit The Cass Scenic Railroad, ask for Otis at the Locomotive Shop and I'll give the nickle tour for free! Heck I'll even give you a free ticket to ride the train!

I'll post picks as the project goes along!

If you really knew how funny that is. I just turned my lawn tractor into a "lawn choo-choo"
