Question towing a 27' prowler 2702BS

Planning a vacation to Missouri with my 2005 Ram 1500 with 3:55 gears.
My salesman LIED and told me I had an 8600 pound tow capacity but after I bought the camper I found out I had the 3:55s and only rated for 7600 lbs because of that I only have a 13,000 lbs CGVW. My trailer is 6550 lbs dry and if I add Truck base of 5261 lbs plus 800 lbs people and the trailer I'm maxed. I have an Equal-izer hitch with sway control. I'm considering Firestone air bags. I drive heavy semi's every day so I'm used to going up mountains at 20-25 mph I don't have a problem with being patient.
I just bought the truck in Dec. I'm looking for a 2500 or 3500 cummins but I found rust spots on my doors today and am nervous about getting another Dodge.
Does anyone have any advise? How do I know a good brake controller from a bad one?

Even if you had the 3.92 or 4.10 gears, your at the weight where a 2500 is a better choice. I pull 7000lbs of trailer with my 1500 all the time, and with a few things in the box of the truck, I run very near the GCVWR. Although the truck does great, I will likely go with a 2500 (again) with my next truck so I don't have to monitor my weights so closely.

For a brake controller, go with a 'proportional/progressive' unit. They are so much better then the 'time ramped' controllers.

Yes, get the proportional/progressive units. They might be more expensive but once adjusted properly, they are VERY smooth. They are a MUST for towing any sort of heavy loads.
