Default Transmission cooling question help please

OK, Fist I have read all the Transmission threads I could find but still have some questions. Before I start here is my trucks data its a 2010 Ram SLT Big Horn 1500 4X2 Crew Cab with a rear 3.55 and OEM 20"wheels and tires also it has 1000 lbs air bags in the rear and a front leveling kit . Here is my problem I bought a 27' enclosed car cargo trailer the weight is 3400 lbs empty total 7500 lbs gw loaded and I towed it back EMPTY from Yuma,AZ to Sacramento,CA . In the beging it seemed it was towing fine then I noticed the transmission temp climbing from 140 to 199 to 225 in deferent areas like on hills and the motor cooling radiator temp was between 180 to 205 now during the trip the out side temps fluctuated between 108 to 100 degrees during the long trip back home, it was in Tow Mode the whole trip back so my question is this what is a acceptable operating transmission temp when towing and should I add a custom transmission cooler and a bigger transmission pan. I will be making a long trip to Texas and it's a 3900 miles round trip and don't want any problems along the way any help would be great thanks.

those temps are ok as long as they are coming back down after the hill climbs. use the search function in some of the other sections. this topic has come up and there is plenty to read.

Ive never seen temps above 180s thats with combined GVW of 18,000 pds.

A 180 thermostate will lower tranny temps abut 20 degrees, and should keep them there.
I tow a lot of weight 5 days a week,so I went to a better made tq converter and a custom #295 Flexalight fan.

The stock transmission cooler is a mess,I was going to get a fan installed on it if temps did not go down with my mods but now temp never get very hot.

I think you should look at some 3:92 gears they would help a ton with the weight.

What was your coolant and engine temp when towing.???.

The coolant temp was between 95 to 110 but the out side temps where between the 100s and 108 during the trip. Also what is the OEM thermostat temp range from the factory .

OEM t-stat is 207 degrees.

how were your coolant temps lower than the air temps? I have a 180 t-stat and my coolant temps are 175-188 depending on hwy vs city driving or if my e-fan is on or off.

your temps were fine for the conditions but like catsltd suggested I'd think about a 3.92 or a 4.10 gear if you are going to be towing regularly.

a deeper trans pan would be an easy swap and something you could do in conjuction with your next trans oil & filter change. I had my exhaust crossover moved further aft and bought the Mag-hytec 68RFE deep pan. Don't know what it'll do for temps because it won't be going on for about 2-3 more weeks.

An aftermarket, over capacity aluminum transmission pan is a good investment. It will transfer heat away from the fluid faster(aluminum transfers heat faster than steel, and it is finned), and you get a few extra quarts which will keep it cooler.

I don't see how a 180 deg coolant tstat would cause reduced transmission temperatures.....but a 180 deg tstat is a good idea in general.

The temps you were running are fine, 225 deg is getting hot for the transmission but like chvyklr said if it's just a peak temp for short period it's fine. If it is sustaining 225 then I'd look to provide better cooling. The stock transmission cooler isn't huge but it is adequate and the stock electric fan will turn on if the transmission temperature gets too hot. Also, if you have the AC on then the electric fan is already running(pulling air through the cooler). This doesn't really matter on the highway but does when sitting idling(trans temps climb greatly when idling).

The gearing changes they suggested would help a lot as well.

How fast were you traveling? Many people try to tow at 70+mph which not only is not safe usually but is really hard on the vehicle. I'm not sure of your speed while towing but there's a huge difference between 65 and 75 or even 65mph and 70mph while towing.
