Default ECU chip question?

Alright so a guy at work has the same modele ram I have. we were talking about our truck when he said he had a chip on it. I think he said his was under $100 bucks. Now I know that hypertech superchips jet and all the big brand companies put out chips that are actually worth a dern but at Aprice that I'm not sure would be worth it on a gas engine. from what he is saying his while it may not provide the sudden "+75 horsepower and extra 300 miles to the gallon" It has given him a noteworthy increase and he's had no ill effects from the install. could it be that some of theses are not entirely gimmics and actually worth the money? and if so how do you tell wich ones?

I originally had a stage 2 jet performance chip in my 04 hemi, I thought I felt a differance in power until i upgraded to a DSP tuner than I REALLY noticed a differance! I'd recommend saving up for a tuner (if there are any available for your truck) instead of a chip.
