Default Ham Radio install location...

Hey Guys,

Been a while, up here in British Columbia the weather has been... less than desirable, that said, my prayers go to those who have suffered as a result of the flooding and tornadoes.
I am studying for my amateur radio license and I'm planning on installing a mobile unit in my 2007 Laramie 4x4. It's got the center console (as opposed to the fold-up center seat.
I'm wondering if anyone with a radio install, can give me some suggestions of how and where they've mounted a radio (pics would be great).
I'm looking at a Yaesu 857D and may use the remote kit, but then need a secure location for the main body that will provide adequate or better air flow.
All the best gang!!

TB

Hey GT,

nice installation, did you get a shop to do that? I like the addition of a cooling fan within the console.
I have a steering column shifter, so mine is a different set-up, but still shows what can be done.
great website btw, I like the aerial of your house.

all the best

My bro-in-law is also an operator and has his mounted beneath his center console with a fan in there. He slotted the plastic console cover at the bottom next to the floor on the front and back for air flow.

looks like a nice small unit....
i haven't had a look myself yet so not sure if there's room or not...AND not sure if the Laramie has the power seating etc buttons in the spot or not....BUT there could be room under the control knobs for the heat etc (mine just has a Ram emblem there) where it could be mounted with just the front bezel of the radio showing
would look near oem that way too

Tinbird, yes i had a shop do mine, my Audio guy really cares about customers vehicles & showed me a couple other places that i could place it, but together we rejected the other places. He also put an concealed auxiliary speaker in my overhead console, it is just above my right ear. If you look closely at the top center of this picture, you can see a slight dimple in the overhead fabric. the image can be clicked on to expand it size twice i believe

So you are saying that the speaker is hidden behind the overhead fabric? Doesn't this fabric muffle he sound from the speaker? I'm looking for a similar approach. What kind of speaker did he put in there?

Just installed a Kenwood TM-D710A in my 2013 Laramie. Fabbed up a piece of sheet metal that bolts down under the passenger seat where the jack was using the hold down bolt holes (both the standard 1500 one and the painted-over one for the 2500/3500 jack). The Kenwood transceiver is mounted on the inside part of this plate and I mounted the bracket for my Icom IC-7000 on the outer part, though not going to install that radio yet.

The remote head and an AvMap G6 GPS unit for APRS are mounted on a Lido UtiliMount on the inside drivers side of the center console pocket (where the gear shift would be if I didn't have a rotary shifter). When I install the Icom, I'll probably put a second mount in front of this one, move the Kenwood/Avmap forward to that one, and put the Icom on the rear one.

I'm going to do a more thorough write-up on my Wordpress site, but here are a couple pics. The first one shows the sheet metal plate being test fit, the second one shows it with the Kenwood transceiver and Icom bracket mounted and the third one is the remote head.

The guy that did the install, took a regular cb external speaker, removed the box part of it, exposing the speaker itself. Then he dropped the overhead liner, drilled a hole through the roof for the Wilson Antenna, ( i couldn't watch that part ), he then dropped the overhead console & cut a circular hole into the back slope of the console just large enough to fit the external speaker into. Then he ran the wiring for both, he test fitted the overhead liner, figured out where the speaker was, he then stripped the foam backing from the liner, just where the speaker was. When he reattached the liner, you could hardly notice that the liner had ever been dropped & there is no distortion in the sound. If you look hard, it is the dark spot at the rear of the console liner
