Default Long crank time and shuddering in overdrive at 45mph

I just picked up a 2001 Ram 1500 2WD 318 Auto with 71,000 miles.
I discovered a couple of issues on its maiden voyage.
First off, when you try to start it, it seems to crank a lot before it starts. Then, when it does catch, it seems to run at real low rpm for a bit. then it stumbles up to speed and idles normally. It does this hot or cold and turning the ignition on for a bit, pre-crank to prime the fuel system, does not seem to help.

Then, the other major issue; when you hit about 40mph and the converter tries to lockup the truck shudders. This goes on up to about 50mph. It lightens up a bit if you back off the accelerator and seems to go away if you stomp on it (ie make it down shift). It does not happen if you have the overdrive turned off.
It also threw a code for a number 7 misfire. That may or may not be related.

Additionally, I've noticed that the fuel pump whines loudly sometimes. So, I may be replacing that soon anyway. Any ideas will greatly be appreciated.

I'd focus on the #7 misfire before ruling that out and then determine if you have a converter issue.

Yeah, that's what I was kind of thinking. I read where someone else had the same shuddering and a misfire code, that turned out to be a bad injector. I hope that's the case here. An injector is a helluva lot cheaper than a new converter.

I'd start with a full tuneup, plugs, cap, rotor and some seafoam thru the system. I would also check the wires. You can also pull the precat o2 sensor and see if it has any buildup on it. You can also have a look down the throttle body to check for oil and a plenum leak. There are all kinds of threads with pics of what to look for.

I agree with namretsud. My moms 03 town car was bucking last week when the converter locked up so I changed out the spark plugs and it went away. I was told if your ignition is running weird the computer will be reading data based on the misfire messing up with transmission relayed data. Same thing with our 98 Lesabre. Cracked spark plugs and arcing wires cause havoc. Also when I had my 1987 camaro it started hard and blew out black smoke. Changed out the wires along with plugs and was good to go.

I too just bought a 2001 Ram 1500. Wanna start off my time with this truck right. Any suggestions on brand of spark plugs and wires? I know they will all do pretty much the same thing but willing to pay the extra cash for quality.

I've had good luck with NGK plugs and MSD wires.
