Yeah, I did pretty much the same thing. I actually thought the warranty was going to be a dealer backed warranty until I made it to the finance manager's office and found out otherwise. I made a snap decision to go ahead with it but thought better of it later....especially after the research I did.

There is nothing wrong with being out to make money but I think the vast majority of these companies are out to make it by screwing people over. The crappy part is that they are doing it legally. Dirty, yes. Illegal, no. I would venture to say the majority of contract purchasers never make it past the first page of the service agreement. The company spells out just how bad they can screw you in the legal section, lol. I sure am glad I read it.

Update: Received a reply email from AUL rep today (same day I sent my email requesting info) apologizing profusely. Apparently the check for the remainder of my refund accidently got attached to some other paper work and got filed somewhere. She found it and assured me it would be mailed out today. As usual, I will update when I get it.

I don't normally go for extended warranties, for most of the reasons already identified above.

However, about 11 years ago I bought a 1997 RAM, was just over 3 years old but it was a sales rep that owned it and had over 330,000km on it (figured out once that the guy had to average over 350km a day, 5 days a week for 3 years).

Anyway, the dealer I bought from typically included a 3-month 3rd-party (Lubrico) warranty on all used vehicles, and I negotiated to split the cost to extend it to 12 months (I think it cost something like $200).

A few months later, tranny starts slipping and engine light would come on regularly, turns out the tranny needed rebuild. Took it to the local shop (not same dealer) that handled Lubrico warranty, had it done in & out in about 3 days. I was out a couple hundred bucks for some things that the warranty didn't cover.

I wouldn't normally buy extended warranty but in this case it certainly saved me some serious cash.

Checked my loan balance today and the last part of the money owed to me due to cancellation of the service contract has been credited towards the loan. So all of this is now officially done and I have 100% of my money back. It only took five months, lol.

Thanks for the heads up. I have always been weary of extended warranties but this was the last nail in the coffin for them, in my book.

Glad to hear you finally got ALL of your money back, sure made you work for it though with all the hoops you had to jump through! I, too, bought a third party contract when I bought my truck new in 2008. For me, it seemed the cost effective option, cheaper to buy at time of truck purchase and deductible was lower.

Chrysler had tried contacting me a few times about purchasing a service contract with them before my factory warranty was up. I didn't respond. They even offered it to me again after my factory warranty expired and this time I decided to do my research. Went to Google the company I had my contract with and NOTHING, they didn't even show up on the internet! At that point, I really had to start taking Chrysler's offer a bit more seriously. Same as the OP, mine had to be sent to my selling dealer, which complicated things a bit because it was one of the dealerships that had to close. I managed to track down the person who had owned the dealership and they were more than willing to work with me to expedite the process. I went ahead and bought the Chrysler lifetime Maxcare warranty so I would be covered while the other NO NAME company took their time lol but still, in about a month or so, I had my money applied to my loan and am so glad I took the time to check into it!

Have to agree, the third party companies are a joke. I won't go without a service contract and I sure as heck will never go without one backed by the manufacturer of my vehicle! After all, they built it so they know how to work on it!
