Default 4x4 Binding

First off I love my new 2012 truck. Been driving it for 4 months now. To keep everything "fresh" in the 4x4, I turn it on 4Low sometimes. Today I did that on dry asphalt while trying to turn, and heard a POP. After research I understand why NOT to do so.

My question is: If I have only hear this loud POP once, does anything think there is any significant damage caused? The 4x4 seems to wind a little more than when engaged previously.

Input is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Sounds like you busted something in the front differential bud. NEVER, NEVER use 4Low on dry asphalt, let alone any mode in 4WD on dry pavement. What you just did is written as a warning in every 4x4 owners manual I've ever read. Take it in to your service department and good luck bud.

Gantman,

Thank you for the reply. I understand that I am not to do that any more-I wasnt taking THAT tight of a turn, less than a quarter turn of the steering wheel.

I will elaborate that after running the 4x4 a few minutes later, it seemed functional and no major issues.

My question is: from one instance would it be typical that there is damage requiring repair? (Most places I've read, people have run into this more than just hard surface). I was seeking input from this forum because it seems legitamite.

No worries man, just test your 4x4 offroad somewhere in your town and see if you get any binding or popping. Without actually opening and inspecting everything, it's a shot in the dark as far as anything damaged. I wish you luck and hope another Ram owner will chime in with the same experience you just had.

I have been a 4x4 owner all my life due to living in Maine most of it. I can say I have never put my vehicle in 4x4 on the pavement cause I know it is a no no.
This is why I firmly believe dealerships should make their sales people earn their money a little more by having the owners go through a small training session on the 4x4 with them or the service dept to make sure new owners don't do this exact thing. This could have been avoided if that were the case. I believe it is the responsibility of both the owner and dealership, not just 1 party.
That being said, i would go back to your dealership if you have any noise in the front differential period! Simply because when you need it, it may let you down in that critical moment. Just my 2 cents. You can omit the part where you intentionally put it in 4x4 low on the pavement, but that's up to you. My personal opinion is be honest so they can correctly diagnose it. And for the record, with todays 4wd systems, you don't need to put it in 4wd every now and then.

The old systems, especially those with lockout hubs, you did this to keep the oil spread around in the front diff and hubs.

With todays systems the front diff & hubs are turning all the time anyway, so no real need to use it every now and then to spread things around.


And you may have snapped an axle u joint, so get it checked out.

The 2 reasons you don't use 4wd on a hard surface are (especially in 4lo when torqeu is the highest):
1) the front and rear gear ratios are slightly different (4.10/4.11, 3.55/3.54, etc), and that can lead to bind in the tcase
2) when turning in 4wd, both sides are trying to turn the same, and that can bind up an axle ujoint pretty bad, but usually only in tight turns

There are parts on the newer 4wd systems that benefit from using the 4wd once in a while...especially these electronic locking hubs, you don't want parts to start sticking, a little use once in a while keeps things moving freely.

You don't need to drive around in 4wd, just engage it for a minute on a straight away (4hi is fine) then go back into 2wd. I use mine regularly for hunting or fishing but once a month is plenty just to prevent things from sticking.

Unless I am missing something, there are no electronic locking hubs on the new trucks....the hubs is always spinning the axle shafts. The only thing that changes is in the diff, where one side is disengaged until you put it in 4wd. That is the only way you can put it in 4wd hi at speed and NOT destroy a gear or shaft.
