Default Direct connect 4 way trailer connector - okay to do this?

Hello everyone.

I have a new to me 2003 1500, 5.9L, quad Cab 4x4 and the trailer wiring isn;t working correctly. I've read through a lot on the Internet and believe that the FCM or IPM may be bad.

I have a camping trip planned for next weekend so need to get this working as soon as possible. I started looking at powered converters that you just tap into the tail light wiring at parts stores and couldn't find one for the 2003.

Dropped by UHaul today to see what they had and they recommended using their 4 way kit that splices directly into the tail light/brake light wiring and has no converter. Just uses wire taps. The guy there said they install them all the time and there are no complaints from customers.

I could do this with no problem but have read in some places that this may damage the truck's electrical system. Those articles suggested using a powered kit that isolates the trailer wiring from the truck's. Is this required or is the wire-tap method acceptable assuming the trailer wiring is in good shape?

Thanks in advance for any input!

I would not do that if I was you, ant trailer wiring problems will mess up your truck wiring system. Get a powered converter.

I ended up going with a Modulite isolating converter that powers directly from the battery and picks up signal from the existing rear wiring. Isolates the trailer from the truck's wiring and works great. Ran about $55.00 from a local trailer hitch and accessory shop.
