Default 1991 Dodge D150 318 CI dies when sitting idle.

1991 Dodge D150 318 CI dies when sitting idle, then it will not start. I have to raise the hood and let it cool down for 20 - 30 minutes. After it cools down it runs fine. It has done this a couple of times last summer and then again today. I do not think it is vapor locking. I removed one of the fuel lines to check for fuel and pressure. I had my son turn the ignition on while I held a bottle over the fuel line and the open port on the carbureator. I am getting plenty of fuel. I think it is something electrical breaking down under the extreme heat when sitting at idle and no movement of air. It has a new battery. New air pump that is one year old now. The temperature gauge is normal and not overheating when this happens. Would someone please share your experiences that might be the same as this one. I would like some tips for troubleshooting to minimize what it could be. It is hard to troubleshoot because it will fix itself. Thanks everyone in advance for all the help

I had a race car that would do that if we were stuck in staging to long. Did not do it every time so like yours it was hard to diagnose. Turned out with me it was a problem with the coil. Might be the same might not, but that is about the best I can do for you. Hope it helps, Shaun

If you have a carb, it's been modified and no telling what the issue might be. If you're affectionately referring to the TBI as a carb, then I'd say your Hall Effect (aka distributor ignition pickup) is failing. They become more sensitive to heat once they begin to fail and will reset and function to varying degrees, becoming less reliable as they go. It's about $30, fits inside distributor, beneath rotor.

I just posted about the repairs made to my 88 Ram with throttle body. I was experiencing vapor lock when hot, and even though I had fuel pressure, it was not high enough to circulate gas back to the tank. I found that there was a split in the hose connected to the fuel pump inside the tank, I was only getting around 13 psi at the tank. Try hooking up a pressure gauge to the 5/16" hose coming out of the fuel tank. the pressure should be around 70 psi. (be sure to tighten all connections before checking!) You could also hook up a gauge to the inlet hose to the TB and plug one end....

+1 for this answer. Common failure, with symptoms exactly as you described. And also, if you're playing the guessing game and changing parts, this is one of the cheapest, and easiest to change. It'll kill spark and injector pulse, by denying the computer a tach signal, and almost always be intermittent, becoming worse over time. Fixed my truck, and a couple like it. Also common on older GMs and Ford distributors.

Default 2001 ram won't start

Just like the others in this thread, it got worse in the heat and then someone siphoned all my gas (ouch) and after adding more fuel it still won't start. "no bus" is on. I have fuel injection tho.

"No BUS" could be a bad connection with the power distribution center or a bad computer.
