Default Driveline Diagnosis help?

Hey guys new to the forum looked around but can't seem to find what i am looking for but anyways on to the issue well i just bought a 2001 dodge ram 1500 slt 5.9 magnum, 2wd, 122,000 miles for $2200 today. But only thing that bothers me is when i shift out of park to drive and (automatic) and hold brake still i notice a clunking noise so i thought it was a u-joint but had the wife do what i did shifting from reverse to drive and park etc. well didn't see any play at all on the front and rear driveshaft. So kind of stumped right now.

2nd question is while driving around 50 - 60 mph i notice a slight vibration or so but when i get on it it doesn't vibrate could this be caust from the drivetrain issue on the first problem. And during deceleration i hear a screeching noise on and off.

If you guys can help me figure this problem out i would greatly appreciate, thank you.

It would be difficult at best trying to detect a bad universal joint by peering at it from a distance while shifting the transmission from one function to another. If I were you, I would place the trans in neutral, ensure the vehicle is not going to roll over you by blocking a wheel from rolling in either direction, and climbing beneath the buggy with a big screwdriver or other suitable prybar and checking the joints by prying in different directions. you should find something catywompous by either doing this, or by physically jerking the driveshaft, front and rear, up and down, back and forth. the slip- spline, or rear pinion nut/ bearing security, I even had a 70 Runner with a cracked tailhousing on the trans. (it leaked, too.) I would guess you would find play in the rear u-joint. Make certain you're in neutral, so the driveshaft is unloaded. unpowered vibration is generally a u-joint. Good Luck!!

X2

It doesn't need to be more than a millimeter of play to create a clunk in a u-joint.

The best way for you to have checked the u-joint was to get both rear wheels off the ground and put it in neutral to check for play.

Just for information
all the U-joints that you purchase from your neighborhood chain store, whether it is Pep Boys, Kragen, O'Riellys, Advantage, etc., are all built with as much as .025 play, that is not much, but they will wear out sooner than some other better brand U-joints, like Spicer & Precision, that are built to stricter clearance standards

Don't be surprised if you still get some clunk after replacing the u-joints. The 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 rears are well known for the clunks as they get old and tolerances open up a bit. It won't fly apart on you, but you will know it's there. It'll be much better with the new u-joints. New axle lube will help too.

If you get the top level joints from Auto Zone (brand label Brute-something), they are made by Moog but are NOT the same as a real Moog joint, the caps and bearings are different. I found this out when I did mine. The rollers are slightly smaller and have greater clearance. Advance Auto carries Moog joints as their top-tier joint. I took the caps off all of the joints I had, the 'Gold' ones had a bunch of little, brittle rollers, the Brute had less, bigger rollers with more clearance. The Moog was nice and tight with the rollers and they are beefy. Also found the caps on the Gold were not quite big enough to really pinch into the rear straps and would float side to side even with the C-clips in place and were too easy of a press into the slip joint for my comfort level. I went through 5 AutoZone 'Gold' joints and 2 Brute (top level AZ joint) on my 96 in a week trying to get a good fit before going to AA and getting a real Moog. You can get Spicers from NAPA. My NAPA is small and had to order them so I went with the Moogs instead.
