Default Re: First oil change

I spoke directly to the dealership mechanic where I bought my truck. He told me that Dodge puts an additive in the engine along with the oil which helps allow for a clean and proper break-in. He advised me not to change the oil at 1500 miles, which was my original plan. I'm now just over 6k and the oil still looks really good. It doesn't smell burnt either. I'm planning on changing it at 8k, like the book says.
All service shops will tell you to change the oil after 3k miles just to keep the business rolling in. A good quality oil with a high viscosity rating is meant to last longer nowadays. If your doing lots of towing and running the engine hotter than average then I'd move towards changing the interval to maybe 6k. JMHO.......

First oil change should be early, around 1000 miles, switch to a good synthetic.
Amsoil, Mobil 1, or Pennzoil Ultra.......If your not running the piss out of your
truck, follow the manufactures time interval (8000 miles), otherwise around
6000 miles would be good.

I ran the oil the dealerships carried at the time, which was MOBILE oil conventional, i did it 3,000 miles intervals

Then Mopar oil contract ran out
the new supplier was Valvoline, i still used it & changed at 3,000 miles

Then that contract ran out
Shell oil got the new contract
Pennzoil for gas engines, Rotella for diesels

I don't like changing oil brands, it can only hurt the engine by gunking up

I started going to Walmart & buying Mobile One synthetic in 5 quart jugs
i go to a parts store & buy a Wix or NAPA Gold oil filter, Carquest when i am back East

I now change oil & filter every 5,000 miles, i supply the oil & filter & the Dodge dealer does the change

5,000 miles is likely over kill, but that is what i want to do
Sometimes when work is plentiful, i reach 5,000 miles in under a month

I have used Mobil 1 syn. for 21 years as has my father. 5k intervals and your engine will last longer than the truck will. I even ran it in my riding mower. After the deck crapped out on it I gave it to my local R/C club. I bet one of my racing buds that the oil in the mower was cleaner than what was in his $40k Chevy truck that he used conventional oil changed at 3k intervals.. I pulled the dipstick on the mower engine after well over two years of use, the Mobil 1 oil still looked like it came out of the bottle. That mower was over 7 years old and the old Briggs And Stratton still purred like a kitten.
