Lightbulb Has anybody done this Modification that is currently using the K&N Fresh air intake ?

Hello member's
I have a question here... My truck is a 2000 Model with the 5.2 Magnum 318 Engine. Right after I got it in The early spring of 2000 I Placed a K&N Fresh air intake & filter on it. Back then these unit's cost about $310.00 which I Thought was Plenty and This fresh air intake included the plastic fresh air housing snorkel, design that fit's right over the top of my Throttle body fuel injection unit, along with a full Flow Chrome finish K&N exposed Tapered air breather which attaches to the end of the Plastic Fresh air intake tube, getting it's fresh air flow from the left front corner of my Core support. This K&N Fresh air intake package unit also came with a Two sided metal box that mount's around the K&N air breather element up against the outer portion of my Core support, more or less to direct the fresh air flow into the Filter, and has a rubber seal that meet's the hood when it is lowered to perform a tight air box effect. Once I got it all Installed and took it out for a Test Run I noticed Right away, that it had Ton's of more Throttle response from a dead start, Than my Factory stock unit provided butmy Gas Mileage did not seem to increase any. My question is, has anybody here in this Thread Modified their Factory stock Throttle body & is currently using the K&N fresh air set up, Like I have on mine ? I want to be certain that there is a Mileage increase and no Ill effect's in Power or mileage before cutting down the top Portion of my Stock Throttle body Fuel Injection unit. I did read this entire thread and noticed that no one seemed to have this complete K&N Fresh air Package like I have on mine, and I do not want to Modify my existing unit if there is no Mileage gain or if it will Rob Horsepower from my truck or make it run different. Thank's in advance for any advise or comment's here, I appreciate it. Regards, Hammerdown

If you're concerned about being able to go back, buy a throttle body off eBay... it's common to the 5.2 used in Jeep and Dodge models of that era... you can get one in good condition for ~$40.
That's not much to pay to be able to take your time on the mod, and install it at your convenience.

There are no ill affects from cutting raised portion off of the throttle body. If you are looking for noticeable mileage gains look in to electric fans & a free flowing exhaust I managed to get 2 mpg average gain with both exhaust & electric fans.

Hello Merf
Now, that the kind of information that is useful. What did you have to do to switch your Ram over to electric Fans ? Thanks, Hammerdown

Your Welcome!
I made a fan shroud but you don't haft to do that you can use the thru radiator straps that they provide with the fans or you can get a single Flex a light 180 for about $320.00 it is a complete kit. But I'm always on a budget so I generally DIY it my setup its on page 2 of this thread.
Parts electric fan controller from Advanced auto $35, I also run a Cole heresy continuous duty solenoid I had it from my Lincoln Marl VI fan I had first it is good for 160 amps
2 16" electric fan rated at a least 2,500 cfm yes they will fit on the radiator it is tight but they fit with 1/2" on each side I wire everything to the battery except the 12 keyed source I tapped the radio fuse & I made my Wiper & Overflow bottle hangers from aluminum 1/8" x 2" I cut the slides for the bottle with a jig saw & filed them till they fit was tight.

Default Fan mod

I just went to Advance Auto and bought their aftermarket 16"electric fan rated 2400 cfm ,(anything over 2200 cfm is sufficent for a small v8)installed it with supplied hardware, installed the 18 dollar adjustable controller they had on the shelf set it at 190f ,reinstalled my stock shroud and accessories and that was that.Worked like a charm, total investment under 100 bucks.Still going a year later, cools very efficiently and is alot quieter than those monster dual-fan setups, plus with the stock shroud installed I dont have that big empty space in front of the engine where water and crap can fly into the engine bay,and I keep the benefit of the directed air right into the front of the engine where it cools the most.

The other thing I would have done with the throttle body would have been to round the entire edges back to create a nice short but smooth radius.

You might have done that and you can't see it in the picture..

If you have it off you might as well make it so the air doesn't have to make a 90 degree turn... air doesn't flow very well that way.
