Default New Oil Pump or new engine?

My 1997 1500 workhorse lost oil pressure on a wood run yesterday; never overheated, no smoke, no loss oil, but valves clattered. I never change the oil, use cheap gas, run at redline, and beat it regularly...not. Got home and parked her; question is, what do I do now? Am going to check oil for shavings, but if no metal, is just replacing the oil pump on a motor with 98,000mi on it the best course, or should I replace the whole motor?
Abuse, ridicule, and off-topic answers welcomed.

I did that to a chev 350 a few years ago, ran a clattering eng w a bad oil pump, about 70 miles, wife had rolled the orig vehicle, and I put the eng in another unit. Changed the pump, a real pain, with a 'hi volume pump' which, I believe has a tougher relief spring than stock, and sold that unit after many, many more miles, and still see it every so often. What I didn't care for after that pump change, was that the oil press gauge went off scale high before the eng was at operating temp, but stayed around 70 while warm. I'd change the pump, simpler, cheaper, and considerably quicker. UNLESS your crankcase was low on oil by more'n a quart when this happened. Worth the risk, in my opinion. that eng of yours has a lotta life left in it, mileage wise, if its been treated reasonably well.

I've had her for two years and put 5500 miles on it. First thing I did was change the oil at a BG center (yep), had every fluid flushed, changed, wiped, blessed, and filtered. 5 speed manual; I don't bog it down but don't run around at redline either. Never had any glitches in operation at all up until now. Wondering about the damn little old lady I bought it from, seemed like a lot of vehicle just to get groceries on Sundays....

Oh, BTW, when the oil pressure first dropped off, I added a quart of oil for no good reason other than hoping it would splash up under the piston crowns. Pulled a quart of oil and strained it, can't see a fleck of metal anywhere. Next, I'll put a bar on the crank nut and see if it turns over or if it froze when it cooled.

if it rotates freely, pull the plugs, give each cylinder with a quick shot of oil
check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge
if there is no pressure change the oil pump

you can charge up your battery & then do wet & dry tests

then do all the other tests that tell you the condition of just about everything about your engine
Most people don't have the proper tools to do all the tests
compression, vacuum, etc
