I just detailed my new 09 yesterday for the first time. I clayed the entire truck and was amazed at what came off. My roof and hood felt similar to the way you describe yours. I had about a dozen specs of rail dust on the roof and the clay bar worked wonders. It made the finish smooth as silk before I polished and waxed it. When you can, spend the money and get one, you'll love it. One hint though, don't drop it. It will pick up all the dirt from the ground and it will be just about useless after that. Since I was a first timer, I did a small section at a time and put a clean trash bag on my driveway under that panel. I didn't drop it, but I didn't want to waste $25 either. Good Luck

I will have to give it a try. Is a clay kit typically a one use deal. IE could I use it more than once, or alternatively on my truck and my wife's car, or is it typically spend after a good detailing?

Yes, they are good for multiple uses. Depending on the condition of the cars, you could get lots of uses out of a single bar. I got mine from www.adamspolishes.com. They have great instructional videos to help out us novices. Check out the videos from the "Junkman," he's helpful and funny.
Good Luck
