I was told using higher octane will minimize any harmful effects that ethanol causes. I live in the east and ethanol is a 10% mixture. Is this true?

No, higher octane ONLY provides more detonation resistance. For optimum performance/mpg use 89 in your hemi. You can also use 87 with little to no difference.

your Owners Manual tells you about gas octanes
unless you are running your vehicle for racing, forget high test gas
it is a waste of $$$$$

I'm 3 weeks into a 3 month test of 89 octane. I have a year's baseline on 87 octane (15.00 MPG). Basically it needs to increase mileage about 0.8 MPG to justify $0.20 more per gallon.

What seems to effect mileage the most is your driving habits and terrain (city, hilly, highway,...)

There is more chemical energy in lower octane fuel. If two fuels are equal except for octane, the lower octane will produce the greater heat/gas expansion in the cylinder. The key is quality imo, not octane. I like shell gas for that reason.

Ps. If you're at high elevation like me you can run lower than 87 perfectly safe.

10% ethanol won't hurt your engine in any way, but anything over 15% does pose a problem because you would need to scale the injectors to spray more fuel as higher ethanol content fuels need a lower air to fuel ratio to reach optimal burn without leaning out the cylinders.

My truck doesn't "like" 87 octane, so I've learned to run 89...

My mileage will drop almost 2 mpg, and it just doesn't sound as though it's running as well. It could all be in my head, but it doesn't really matter.. LOL the butt dyno says it all

I always thought levels greater than 20% were the issue..... no?
