Default GPS Map update

GPS Map Update

Has anyone checked into a GPS update for the RHB or RHR gps models in the 2012 dodge ram trucks. I did they seem to want 149.00 for the update, there is a update for the RHB right now ( 2011 dodge trucks ) the RHR 2012 model next update November.

A 58000 dollar truck, and you have to pay for GPS updates, you can buy a Garmin GPS and have free updates, whats the deal.

If you get out your manual (disc) it tells you the site to go to.

OK, i am not crazy, so believe me

DO NOT upgrade your Navigation Maps until a minimum of 3 years has passed
they tell you $149, after shipping & taxes, it comes close to $180

Here is the whole truth, they very seldom upgrade the maps
you may buy the upgraded CD & it will have the revision date of 2010
the same version as what you already have
When you call the map provider, either NAVTEQ or Garmin, ask what the DATE of the upgrade is
I bought an upgrade map CD, 3 years after i bought the truck new,
in San Diego County there were 3 brand new highways, all were open, no longer under construction & not a single one was on the Updated CD
Talk about a complete waste of $$$

I bought a Garmin NUVI, with LIfetime Mapping & Traffic
no charge to upgrade

If you have a Smart Phone, just download the APP

forget about updating the stupid maps available on the Ram Mygig Navigation Radios
you will NEVER get your moneys worth

We have the Garmin NUVI at work, it updates about once a year, free upgrades. I just dont understand why the one in the truck there has to be a cost. I wont be paying the 149.00, thanks GTyankee

Unless you live and/or drive in areas where new development is adding new roads or highways, there is no need to update annually. The same roads and highways your Nav can find now will still be there. I agree that in this day and age it is ridiculous to charge such a high price for an update.

There are problems with that since the phone doesn't integrate as well with the radio. For instance, the turn-by-turn voice direction will only work via BT when the input on the radio is set to BT audio. If you are listening to a CD or radio while navigating you will not hear the directions and would have to disconnect from BT and depend on the phone's tiny speaker. You are also using data on your phone when navigating, something you could end up paying for if you exceed your carrier's data plan. I've also yet to see a phone's GPS be as accurate as the head unit in a vehicle. In outlying areas I often see the marker on my phone's GPS tracking jump around when signal is weak or lost. That never happens in my truck. I also have difficulty seeing the map on my smaller phone screen compared to the screen on my RHB with my 54 year old eyes.

I think it's insane how much they charge for map updates. OK, I understand they've got to make a buck and part of that goes back into making a better product. However, it the upgrade price was more reasonable, I'm sure a lot more people would upgrade annually.
