well i put the new shocks on a couple months ago and rotated the tires then. since i have drove about 12000 miles and the cupping is back. im gettin an alignment done this weekend along with new tires. how do you diagnose bad ball joints? i know my wheel bearings r good because i have no play in the wheel when lifted with a floorjack.

On my truck when turning I would hear a pronounced "CLUNK". A total of 3 clunks from lock to lock. The wear on the inside of the rear tires told the story, that with a visual inspection of the ball joints that proved to be the originals. I had no play in the wheels when jacked up, but the joints were shot.

When my ball joints failed, it sounded like I was riding on mud tires. I was driving on the edge of the tire. When I would speed up, the wheel would straighten up and the noise would go away. I heard no clunks or anything else.

After the ball joints were repaired, an alignment was performed. All was well in the world until... About 2 weeks later, something happened and my alignment was way out. I had the wheel turned 20 in order to go straight. I brought it back to the shop that did the alignment and they said that they had never seen an alignment that bad. I have no idea what happened. They fixed it up and it's been good ever since.
